All about the trip
Once we pick you up in your accommodation in Brasov, our first stop will be at Sinca Veche Orthodox Complex where we will visit an Orthodox cave church, built by the Orthodox Christians. The historians agree that the church is unique in the world. It was used as a refugee place by the Orthodox monks persecuted by Maria Theresa to be converted to the Catholic faith.
In a nearby village, Ohaba, there is the oldest watermill, which is still working. You will have a chance to see how it operates and the hospitable owners will invite you for some coffee or tea. The next waypoint of our trip is the Fagaras Citadel, one of the greatest and well-preserved citadels in Eastern Europe. Built between the 14th and 17th century, it served more purpose: residence for royalty, citadel, military base of the Austrian army, Romanian army base, political prison (1950 – 1960) and today the museum of the County of Fagaras. Once we are on the way to Sibiu, the last stop will be at Carta, where we will find the only ruin of a Cistercian monastery in Romania, dating to the first half of the 13th century.
At Sibiu, our main destination, you’ll visit the historical center of the most important settlement of the Transylvanian Saxons. The ancient walls and towers can still be seen today. They surrounded the medieval city to protect it from the enemy invasions. The main attractions are Piata Mare (the Great Square) with the town hall and Brukental Museum, the Council Tower (from which you can admire the whole city), the Ursuline nuns church, the Bridge of Lies, the Evangelic Cathedral, and the Orthodox Cathedral.
After such a perfect day, we will take you back to Braşov.
