All about the trip
Some 5000 years ago the ancient Thracians inhabiting the territory of the present-day Bulgarian lands began to grow and make wine. They brought the first vines from the Middle East in what is now known as South Bulgaria and they were the first ones on the Balkan Peninsula who made wine out of the grapes. They used the wine not only as a drink on the table but also in many of their religious rituals. Through the wine, they were reaching their gods. The Thracians were considered as some of the finest winemakers in the Antique world. In his works, Homer often mentioned the superior qualities of the Thracian wines. According to him the most famous wine with the richest aroma and the full body was from Thracia. In 1966 Bulgaria was the 6th largest exporter of wine in the world. Nowadays Bulgaria produces some of the finest wines in the world and is a main exporting country on the global wine market. Local Bulgarian sorts of wines as Mavrud, Melnik, Gamza, Dimiat, Rubin and more are famous around the world and have won many international awards.
Villa Yustina is situated at the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains, some 26 km away from Plovdiv. The winery location is specially chosen because the Plovdiv region is among the few with a significant wine history originating from Antiquity. Nowadays the wine experts at Villa Yustina wine cellar combine the millennia experience with the latest wine producing technologies. This is one of the most modern wineries in Bulgaria which is fully equipped with first class cellar technology of the newest generation. The top Villa Yustina wine “Monogram” which is a blend of Mavrud and Rubin wines wins every year many prestigious international awards. For several years “Monogram” is awarded the gold medal at the Balkan wine competition “VINO BALKANIKA” and it is highly appreciated by the foreign journalists.
On this tour, we visit Villa Yustina boutique winery to taste some of their excellent wines. The wine tour includes a visit to the fermentation room, the storage room where the wine ages in oak barrels, the enoteca and the wine tasting room where we try 5 local wines with appetizers. Winetasting of 5 wines is possible at a little extra cost. In the end, we explore the vineyards including the observation tower on the hill from where we enjoy a wonderful panorama all around the valley and the Rhodope Mountains in the close distance.
