All about the trip
Your Private Yokohama tour starts with a boat ride around the harbour on the Sea Bass. You will be greeted with the great Port of Yokohama and a panorama view of the city. Our destination is Yamashita Park. We will be arrive just as early immigrants did; by boat. Permanently docked in the port is the Hikawa Maru (氷川丸), an early Japanese ocean liner with a fascinating history. Here we will discover more about her and her passengers.
From the Port we stroll up to Yamate Hill, a residential area which developed shortly after the Port opened in 1859. Here we visit the Spanish villas and Victorian residences that the early Western settlers lived in. You will find out who lived here and why they came to Yokohama.
From Yamate Hill it is a short walk down to Chinatown; home to the early Chinese settlers. Yokohama's Chinatown is the largest in Japan and one of the biggest in the world. We visit a 150 year old temple that has served as the main grounds of worship for the Chinese settlers. We will then embark on a food crawl around the narrow laneways, discovering the best of Yokohama’s Chinatown cuisines. Enormous steamed buns, Shumai dumplings and fried sesame balls.
From Chinatown we travel to Minato Mirai, a 10 minute train ride away see the more modern side of Yokohama.
In Minato Mirai, we explore the modern development of Yokohama. Here, you will take a walk along the water front visiting the Red Brick Warehouse. Originally a customs house that served from 1911-1989, but now converted into a boutique shopping outlet. It’s a great place to pick up some unique Yokohama souvenirs.
The final stop on our Yokohama tour is the Cup Noodle Museum. Here we will learn about the history of one of Japan’s most famous exports and about the life of its inventor; Momofuku Ando. At the very end of the tour, you can participate in a make your own Cup Noodle workshop.
This tour ends at the Cup Noodle Museum. You can choose to explore the modern city of Minato Mirai on your own or be guided back to the Minato Mirai Station. The Minato Mirai Station is approximately 40 minutes away from Tokyo.
