All about the trip
On this excursion, you will get to know Comillas, the only modernist village in Cantabria. You will be surprised to know the fascinating history that links this village with Mr. Antonio López y López, the first Marquese of Comillas and the true promoter of the main unique elements of Comillas.
Our first stop will be to participate in a guided visit to the previous Seminary of Comillas, a majestic building from the end of the 19th century. It was done by the famous Catalan architect Mr. Lluís Domenec i Montaner and it is one of the most emblematic buildings in town. This building is like the cradle of Catalan Modernism, as it has inside the first stained glass window with thistles, so typical of this artistic movement. You will definitively be surprised by the architectural treasures that this imposing but unknown building contains.
From the old Seminary, we can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Comillas and, in particular, of the Palacio de Sobrellano (what should have been the summer residence of the Marquis of Comillas and his illustrious guest, King Alfonso XII). You will also be surprised by its Pantheon Chapel next to the palace, as it is like a mini Gothic cathedral.
Afterward, we will do a short walk along Comillas up to Villa Quijano, commonly known as “Capricho de Gaudí”, where we will dedicate some time to visit it. This villa is one of the first works of the famous Catalan architect Antonio Gaudí and was built in 1885. The building is just amazing and it stands to be the beginning of the modernist movement, as well as being one of the few works that Gaudí carried out outside of Catalonia.
Finally, we will take the opportunity to take a short scenic-drive tour around Comillas to see some of the most emblematic places of this city, such as the old cemetery, the port, or the Comillas beach.
